This crack could have been extremely hazardous to the couple who had just bought the house.

Discussion about the danger of annealed glass led us to replace it with a tempered reflective safety glass unit due to this window being above front entry doors, and the customers expecting their first child.

AFTER PHOTO:

I made a pattern for Glasswerks to fabricate a new tempered safety glass unit since this arch did not have a true radius.

Once the old broken unit is removed, a new tempered safety glass unit is installed, and the final step is to expertly clean the glass.

SBG Q&A: Annealed vs. tempered glass: How different is it?

Tempered glass is harder and stronger than annealed glass. When tempered glass breaks, it breaks into small pebble-shaped pieces like a car’s side window glass after an accident. This is why it is often called safety glass. Tempered glass is annealed glass that has been heat-treated to harden and strengthen it.

Tempered glass is more expensive than annealed glass because of the added heat treatment processing. Heat-treated glass is 4 times stronger than annealed.

In general, tempered glass cannot be drilled or cut without shattering. All fabrication needs to be done while the glass is in the softer, annealed condition. Annealed glass can be cut, drilled, notched, and edge-finished. Tempering is only done once the shaping and fabrication is complete.
